Story[]

On June 17, 2018 the NWS issued a tornado watch for the southern Illinois area. Storms were coming from the northwest of Missouri and right into Illinois.

On June 18, 2018 around 2:30 P.M the NWS issued a tornado warning for the county of Macoupin County, The county next to Montgomery. The county in which Litchfield is in. A minor EF1 touched down in the cornfields of west Macoupin County. At 3:30 P.M. a severe thunderstorm started rolling into the area. Soon after around 4:15 P.M, the storm started rolling into Litchfield. People say that the clouds were dark as black. A tornado warning is issued for the area.

People in Litchfield saw a funnel cloud in the distance. The funnel touched down near the state police headquarters. It moved over the highway and into Litchfield. The NWS at the time confirmed that it was an EF3. A minute or two it was an EF4. Right when it was hitting Litchfield it turned into a EnF5. The massive tornado moved to the downtown area of Litchfield.

"There was debris everywhere," says The Mayor of Litchfield. The mayor was in his office at the time when the tornado hit Litchfield. The tornado moved right into the homes of Litchfield, Destroying them in a ninstant. The tornado then hit the Middle School then died out in a cornfield.

104 people died from this tornado and 246 were injured. Litchfield soon rebuilt homes and businesses after the tornado.
